Course description:

CMCLP 001 WRITING SKILLS I: This is a basic writing skills course designed to introduce the students to continuous or paragraph writing in the English language. The technique applied in the course is guided writing.

Objective:
This course module is intended to enhance the confidence of the students. Effective writing techniques are applied to support learners who have no previous experience of writing in English.

Expected outcome:

  1. By the end of this course, the learners should have improved their paragraph-writing ability in English.
  2. Learners should have developed the ability to construct paragraphs on the basis of topic, consistency and unity.
  • Learners should have developed the ability to recognize incorrect grammar and word choice in sentences and paragraphs.

(3 credit for 6 months training)

 

CMCLP 002 WRITING SKILLS II (3 Credits):

Objective.
This course module is intended to introduce the students to the practice of analytical writing in the English language. Students will be taught to write beyond the paragraph level, and be able to deal with descriptive and analytical writing for professional and academic purposes.

 

Expected outcome

  1. By the end of this course, the learners should have attained a high sense of awareness of the special demands of professional and academic writing.
  2. Learners should have developed a better understanding of the application of various stylistic functions in English, including description, definition, exemplification and classification,
  • Learners should be able to produce coherently written paragraphs, and should have been exposed to a variety of samples of professional and academic writing.

(+3 credit for 1 year training)

 

CMCLP 003 READING & COMPREHENSION SKILLS I (3 Credits): This is a basic reading course where Learners will benefit from extensive reading activities.

Objective.
This course module is intended to inspire thinking and reading, and to promote vocabulary building by teaching essential vocabulary in context.

Expected outcome

  1. By the end of this course, Learners should have improved their ability to independently read and understand general English texts.
  2. Learners should have developed the ability to make appropriate conclusions and presumptions from texts
  • Learners should have improved their ability to read and analyze general texts in a critical manner,
  1. Learners should have acquired the ability to work out the meanings of unfamiliar words through the use of context clues, and increased their overall reading speed.

 

CMCLP 004 READING & COMPREHENSION SKILLS II: This is a higher-level reading comprehension component of the Language proficiency course

Objective:
This course module is intended to develop the reading and comprehension speed of the Learners up to an intermediate level through the combined use of browsing, flicking and detailed reading of English texts. Note-taking and summary will also be taught as a means of enhancing reading and comprehension abilities of learners.

Expected outcome

  1. By the end of this course, Learners should have the ability to scan the main ideas of a text as a pre-reading technique,
  2. Learners should be able to skim a text for detailed information.
  • Learners should be able to make informed guesses of the meanings of unfamiliar words with the help of context.
  1. Learners should be able take notes of the relevant points in paragraphs in a text as a means of achieving comprehension.
  2. Learners should be able to establish knowledge of a text by correctly summarizing the main ideas.

CMCLP 005 LISTENING & SPEAKING SKILLS I: This is a course designed for learners to be able to listen and speak English competently.

Objective.
The course module is intended to provide openings for the Learners to debates, engage in role-plays and dialogue.

Expected outcome:

  1. By the end of this course, Learners should have improved their eloquence and capability to engage in social, professional and literate conversations in English,
  2. Learners should have improved their ability to engage in English conversations with Anglophones.
  • Learners should have improved their accuracy in English pronunciation.
  1. Learners should have acquired the basics skills of using persuasive arguments in English in backing theirs stands in a discussion.

 

CMCLP 006 LISTENING & SPEAKING SKILLS II:

Objective.
This course module is designed to raise the listening and speaking competence of the students to a higher level.

Expected outcome.

  1. By the end of this course the Learners should have been able to engage in conversations in English on problem-solving.
  2. Learners should understand and respond properly to English speakers with different accents.
  • Learners should have the ability to deliver short presentations and apply higher-level persuasive arguments in English.
  1. Learners should be able to support their position at any high level debate in English.

 

CMCLP007 STRUCTURE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE I: This course is a basic grammar course designed to develop the grammar skills of Learners.

Objective.
This course module is designed to concentrate on the functions of the English grammar in basic forms.

Expected outcome

  1. By the end of this course, Learners should have generally improved the grammatical accuracy of their spoken and written sentences.
  2. Learners should have grasped the correct use of English articles; the simple, continuous, perfect and future tenses; sentence patterns and pronouns, including the interrogative, negative, questions;
  • Learners should have been able to make use of prepositions of place, movement and time; the modal system in English; passive sentences; and relative clauses.

 

CMCLP 008 STRUCTURE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE II:

Objective.
This course module is designed to consolidate the learners’ existing grammar skills, and also to raise their awareness of possible pitfalls in grammatical usage in conversation and writing.

Expected outcome.

By the end of this course, learners should have developed the ability to recognize incorrect grammar and word choice in sentences and paragraphs.

Learners should have improved the grammatical accuracy of their spoken and written sentences,

Learners should have developed an awareness of the functions and correct use of modals, interrogatives, negation and passive structures in the English language.

 

CMCLP 009 LITERATURE IN ENGLISH

Objective.
The course is designed to enable the learners appreciate literature in the English language. The three branches of literature, namely drama, poetry and prose, are discovered through isolated reading, class discussion and performance.

Expected outcome.

By the end of this course, the students should have acquired enough appreciation of drama, poetry and prose in the English language to motivate them to read for pleasure.

Learners should have built upon their English vocabulary and stock of English expressions to a degree that should make them become independent readers,

Learners should have established ways to relate the rules learned in grammar lessons in their reading and vice versa,

Learners have gained some exposure to the cultures of English speakers, as represented in their writing.
